The grounds include the lawn and gardens which come with the let of the castle. The parkland is the rest of the estate, including the river, wood and fields, to which visitors may have access.

Flora & Fauna

Autumn trees in the parklandTrees
Our surrounding parkland with its many varieties of trees is particularly beautiful in its lush spring green and its myriad of autumnal hues. The parkland and grounds have been planted and improved over many generations, so that now numerous mature oak, lime, beech, maple, hornbeam, and other deciduous trees may be seen. There are stands of Scots pine and western hemlock and many other interesting specimen conifers including a wellingtonia, a cedar and a gingko.

Wildflowers
In the spring the violets and primroses are prolific in many sheltered areas of the parkland and bluebells are profuse in parts of the wood. In the summer, a great variety of wildflowers grow in the paddock, in wooded areas and by the river.

Wildlife
The parkland of Anner Castle, with its varied habitats, is a haven for native wildlife. Recent sightings include otters, badgers, foxes, stoat, red squirrels, a peregrine falcon, kestrels, long-eared owls, kingfishers, dippers, herons and nesting swans.

Poem

Extract from 'By Anner's Wave" by P. O'H. Peters.

I'd feel again those happy hours
When by the Anner's side
We fondly plucked the scattered flowers
And cast them in the tide.

Now, Innishlonaght's verdant woods
Are burnishéd with gold;
The stately cliffs of Slievenamon
Are charming to behold.

The River Anner, marking the western
boundary of the parkland
